In commemoration of World Food Safety Day, the Chilean Agency for Food Quality and Safety (ACHIPIA) brought together representatives from the public sector, academia, and several industry associations to analyze the challenges and opportunities facing food safety in Chile from a One Health perspective.
The event, held on June 9, focused on the implementation of the 2026–2036 National Food Safety and Quality Policy, which was approved in December 2025. This initiative aims to strengthen coordination between government agencies, the private sector, academia, and the public, encouraging science-based approaches, risk prevention, and shared responsibility.
The event featured a panel discussion with trade associations from the productive sector, including representatives from Pensar Agro, AB Chile, the Salmon Council, the National Agricultural Society (SNA), and ChileCarne. At the meeting, ChileCarne’s president Juan Carlos Domínguez shared insights into the pork and chicken export sector, highlighting the role of food safety in building consumer confidence and in making Chile more competitive in international markets.
“Food safety is a strategic asset for the country. Our sector is heavily reliant on exports, and as producers and exporters, we know that people have placed their trust in what we deliver. That reputation has been built over the years and is part of the image of our country that we project in international markets,” he said.
Domínguez also noted that Chile has spent decades building an internationally recognized health and food safety system, which has allowed the country to cement its reputation as a trusted food supplier and shore up its presence in global markets. Likewise, he stressed that food safety is a key requirement for gaining and maintaining access to export markets.
During his remarks, he also noted the importance of traceability and the need for increasingly accurate information on the origin and supply chain of food, which is increasingly being demanded by consumers and health authorities. He also highlighted the contributions of the academic community and the need to further strengthen public policies and regulations based on scientific evidence and risk analysis.
Using the theme “From Challenges to Solutions: Safe Food Everywhere,” the meeting reaffirmed the role of collaboration among the many players in the food system to move toward production that is increasingly safe, sustainable, and aligned with international standards.
