On April 17, ChileCarne convened a meeting with Paula Estévez, Undersecretary for International Economic Affairs (SUBREI), to discuss strategies to enhance competitiveness and facilitate access to international markets.
The meeting was attended by Juan Carlos Domínguez, president of the association, and Pía Barros, communications and marketing manager. They emphasized the sector’s strategic importance as the country’s fourth-largest food exporter.
During the meeting, it was noted that pork and chicken account for nearly 85% of production and 88% of exports, reaching more than 30 markets around the world. With this in mind, the participants discussed the primary destination markets and the challenges involved in maintaining the sector’s competitiveness in an increasingly demanding global environment.
With regard to health, the discussion focused on the need to continue opening markets and implementing zoning agreements for African swine fever (ASF), particularly in strategic destinations such as Japan, South Korea, and China. ChileCarne also highlighted the importance of finalizing processes in emerging markets such as Vietnam, where there is growth potential for Chilean exports.
Regarding trade negotiations, the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with the Philippines was cited as an opportunity to expand Chile’s presence in Asia, along with other factors affecting competitiveness, such as the tariff situation in the United States.
The meeting was an opportunity to strengthen public-private coordination on international market access, stressing the importance of a joint agenda that ensures export continuity and strengthens the position of Chilean meat products in strategic markets.
