Negotiations between Chile and the United States to expand the exemptions to the 12.5% tariff applied to Chilean products are still ongoing. On July 27, ChileCarne, represented by its President, Juan Carlos Domínguez, attended a meeting organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Chile’s main export associations to coordinate the strategy that the government will pursue in the coming weeks.
During the meeting, led by Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna, authorities explained that talks with the US remain open and that the goal is to have more Chilean products excluded from the tariff. They also reported that the Deputy United States Trade Representative (USTR), Jeff Goettman, will visit Chile in late August to continue the talks, in what will be his first official visit to South America.
The process is especially relevant for ChileCarne, since the US and Puerto Rico are the top destinations for Chilean poultry exports, accounting for 54% of the total value exported in 2025. The new tariff not only hinders competitiveness against US producers, but also other exporting countries with a lower tariff burden.
The meeting was also attended by representatives from the Chilean Federation of Industry (SOFOFA), the Confederation of Production and Trade (CPC), the National Agricultural Society (SNA), SalmonChile, the Salmon Council, Fruits from Chile, ChileAlimentos, the Association of Manufacture and Services Exporters (ASEXMA), the Chilean-American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham), the Chilean Forest Products Corporation (CORMA), and Wines of Chile.
The meeting strengthened coordination between the public sector and the export associations to continue promoting efforts to extend exemptions to the new tariff and safeguard the competitiveness of Chilean exports in the US market.
