To learn more about operations in high-tech poultry-processing plants, especially those using high-speed lines and adhering to strict health standards, ChileCarne’s Operations and Foreign Trade Manager, Rodrigo Castañón, was part of a public-private mission to the United States and Canada during the second week of March.
The visit was an opportunity to learn about advanced technologies, health inspection systems, and automation tools used in poultry processing facilities that handle large volumes per hour, all under strict health and oversight standards.
The delegation visited two globally recognized facilities. In the US, they toured the Bell & Evans plant, a family-owned business in Pennsylvania. Established in 1894, the company is known for its high-quality chicken and innovative practices that prioritize animal welfare and traceability across the entire production process. Scott Sechler, the company’s leader, welcomed the delegation and allowed them to learn about its growth and continuous improvement efforts.
The visit to Canada included a tour of Maple Lodge Farms, a family-owned business established in 1955 that is now the country’s biggest independent chicken processor. Their production approach is notable for its efficiency, integrated processes, and diversification.
The delegation also included Esteban Canales from the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG), along with Karin Brintrup and Rodrigo Abarzúa from Agrosuper, in an itinerary that combined technical discussions with firsthand observation of cutting-edge production processes.
The mission was supported by Marel, an international company that specializes in food processing solutions and equipment. Their involvement offered greater insights into the systems and technologies observed during the visits.
The plants visited demonstrated how automation, advanced inspection systems, and specialized equipment support the operation of high-speed lines and enhance efficiency, traceability, and health controls across the entire production process.
These types of initiatives help enhance the sector’s technical expertise while also identifying trends and best practices related to innovation, efficiency, and health standards within the global poultry industry.
