Chicken production is on track to reach 103.4 million tons in 2023; the report expects it to grow 1%. Global pork production is expected to remain stable, nearly unchanged at 114.3 million tons this year.
The latest United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) report on world livestock and poultry markets, as well as trade, signals that mixed trends are expected in 2023. While chicken revenues are forecast to increase, pork is expected to remain unchanged from 2022.
When it comes to chicken, USDA indicates that global production will increase by 1% in 2023, reaching 103.4 million tons, mainly due to increases in Brazil and the United States, as well as in Thailand, Mexico, and Turkey. Although feed prices remain high, lower corn and soybean prices in 2023 are expected to boost production in most countries.
Brazil is expected to have the world’s largest chicken production with a 3% increase, reaching a record 14.9 million tons, thanks to foreign demand and lower production costs.
Global exports are also forecast to increase by 1% in 2023, with 13.7 million tons, positioning Brazil as the world’s largest exporter, with a 7% increase.
In the United States, production is expected to increase by 1% and exports are forecast to increase slightly to 3.3 million tons. However, due to relatively higher prices in the United States, Brazil and other suppliers are expected to gain competitiveness and increase their sales.
As for Chile, Chilean Customs reports that the country has produced 112,000 tons cwe of chicken so far in 2023, 0.2% less than in the same period in 2022.
To date, 53,000 tons cwe of chicken have been exported, amounting to 99 million USD, 11% more in volume and 22% less in value compared to the same period last year.
Additionally, the report predicts that world pork production will remain nearly unchanged from last year, at 114.3 million tons. The European Union, the United Kingdom, and Canada will see reduced production, which will be offset by increased production in the United States, Vietnam, Brazil, and China.
EU pork production is forecast to drop 3% each year due to environmental regulations and weaker profit margins for producers. Vietnam’s production is expected to increase by 6% and Brazil’s is expected to grow by 2% each year.
Chile has produced 91,000 tons cwe of pork so far in 2023, 0.6% more than in the same period in 2022, according to Chilean Customs.
Meanwhile, world pork exports are projected to reach 10.6 million tons in 2023, which is 3% less than 2022. Exports from the EU, Canada, and Mexico have decreased, while shipments from Brazil and China have grown. U.S. pork production is expected to be 1% higher than last year at 12.4 million tons, with a slight increase in exports to China, Japan, and South Korea.
According to Chilean Customs, Chile has exported 123,000 tons cwe of pork so far in 2023, amounting to 205 million USD, 36% more in volume and 49% more in value compared to the same period in 2022.
